PINE RIVER -- The Cass County Board tabled until the Aug. 20 meeting the issue of whether to authorize increasing the law library fee from $5 to $10.
Judge Michael J. Haas and the county law library board seek the increase to maintain the fund balance at or above $34,000.
Commissioner Jim Demgen asked how that fund balance need is determined. Other commissioners wanted additional information about how law library funds are used.
In a letter to the board, Haas questioned whether it might be time to replace the computer in the county's law library because it "is aged and the mouse does not work very effectively..."
He also said the $5 law library fee charged to people convicted of crimes in the county generated $23,193.39 last year, but law library expenses ran $25,705.84, causing the loss of $2,512.45 from the library fund balance.
