PINE RIVER -- Cass County Assessor Steve Kuha reported property values in Cass County rose 19 percent in the last year to $3.464 billion, the greatest increase in the last four years.
This represents the 2002 property valuation to be used for computing property taxes payable in 2003.
New construction rose $85 million, or 29.2 percent over the value of new construction the previous year. There were 439 new home starts this year.
This compares with 387 new home starts in the 2001 assessment, 347 new starts in 2000 and 270 new starts in 1999, Kuha said.
The taxable market value of property in the county is $2.759 billion, up 14 percent over 2001. This gives a $28.677 million tax capacity, up 13.4 percent in 2002. Of that about 3.5 to 4 percent is the new construction, he said.
The market value of non-taxed property in the county is up 20 percent this year.
