LAPORTE -- Lyman D. Schmidt, 94, Laporte, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
He was born Oct. 27, 1907, to Peter and Mary Ann (Dinsdale) Schmidt in Dinsdale, Iowa. He lived in Dinsdale until his family moved to Benedict in the 1920s. He attended school in Walker but returned to Dinsdale where he graduated from high school. After graduation he returned to the Benedict area and married Ethel L. Underhill of Laporte. In the spring of 1938 they settled on a farm east of Garfield Lake and raised their four children. He continued to farm until 2000 when he became a resident of Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
During his 80 years in Laporte, he was active in the community and served on several local boards and committees, including the Laporte School Board, Lakeporte Township Board, the Beltrami Electric Co-op Board, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board, Soil and Water Conservation Board, Resource Conservation Development Board, Minn-Kota Electric Board and the Headwaters Regional Development Commission. He also served as a 4-H leader. At the time of his death he was still active on four committees. He was a candidate for the Minnesota State Legislature.
Survivors include his son, Dean Schmidt, Laporte; two daughters, Zona Raddatz, and Winnie DauSchmidt, both of Laporte; a sister, Gertrude Hanson, Gettysburg, Penn.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
His wife and a daughter, Lynette Griffin, died earlier.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Kabekona Free Methodist Church.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas-Dennis Funeral Home in Walker and one hour before services Thursday at the church.
