Brainerd Area Civic Center staff hours have been cut in an effort to make the ice arenas self supporting.

Council to explore cost of joint study on railroad quiet zone
BAXTER - The Baxter City Council Monday voted 3-1 to find out how much a joint feasibility study for a railroad quiet zone designation with the city of Brainerd and Crow Wing County would cost.

A man critically injured during a brutal assault July 15 in northeast Brainerd is now in jail for his role in the fight.

ONAMIA - John Hopkins, 76-year-old resident of Onamia, Minn., passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Onamia, Minn. Interment will be in the Onamia Veterans Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to Mass on Friday at the church. Arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Onamia.

Reno Valentino
CROSBY - Reno Isadore Valentino, age 91, of Crosby, died on Aug. 3, 2008, at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. He was born on March 7, 1917, in Ironton to Richard and Rose (Ballone) Valentino. He married Lily Beatrice Moritz on March 13, 1940, in Brainerd. He was a WWII Army veteran and a member of the Myrin-James American Legion Post No. 443 of Ironton. He was a retired M.A. Hanna Mining employee with 30 years of service. He was also a former custodian at the Crosby-Ironton High School. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crosby.

COON RAPIDS - Ambrose Simon Pikula, age 80, of Coon Rapids, formerly of Brainerd, passed away on Aug. 2, 2008. Preceded in death by wife, Avis.

Terrence Oddson
PEQUOT LAKES - Terrence "Terry" Oddson, age 63, of Pequot Lakes, passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. He was born March 11, 1945, in Minneapolis to Belmont and Lauretta Oddson. Terry owned and operated Ideal Trucking of Pequot Lakes.

Bernice E. Henderson
FIFTY LAKES - Bernice Elizabeth Henderson, age 76, of Fifty Lakes, died on Aug. 3, 2008, at her daughter's home in Lake City. She was born on Jan. 19, 1932, in Somerset, Wis., to Thomas and Elizabeth (Lemire) Berube. She married Richard Nathan Henderson on Oct. 25, 1947, in St. Paul.

I have nothing but praise for the younger generation who are active in the choir, band, orchestra, and other extracurricular activities in general at Brainerd High School. I am speaking specifically of the music students who have assisted the Order of Elks at the Crow Wing County Fair at the Elks Food Booth.

A changing culture in the Senate
WASHINGTON - Senators are great glad-handers, not just with their constituents but with each other. Every time a vote is called, they mill around in front of the rostrum, grabbing hands and shoulders, or patting each other's back.

VOX POP
Once again the specter of a doctorless community is raised in relation to the Crosby school referendum. This fear tactic was used in Brainerd. Who are the most frequent users of physician services? Older people whose children are long out of school and who rely on their doctor and whose vote was sought to pass the referendum. To my knowledge there has been no mass exodus of physicians from Brainerd. So, older voters, vote on the issue as you see fit not in reaction to a fear tactic.

SOBIESKI - The Lastrup Lakers earned their first trip to the Class C state tournament with an 11-2 victory over the St. Stephen Steves in the Region 8C amateur baseball tournament Sunday.

Kohls celebrates birthday with victory
Brainerd Blue Thunder pitcher Adam Kohls took the mound on his 21st birthday Monday night and was looking for a present - his first win of the year. Thanks to the Thunder bats and a great eighth inning pitching on his part, Kohls got a 7-4 win over the first-place Mankato Moon Dogs in Northwoods League action at Mills Field.
