20 years ago (1989)

Railroad shop property making up the Brainerd International Trade Centre has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the state historical society it is one of only three 19th century railroad shops in Minnesota.

30 years ago (1979)

Sherman Gibbons, accused slayer of a rural Nisswa youth, was convicted last night of second degree murder. The guilty verdict ended Gibbons' eight-day trial in Duluth. County attorney Stephen Rathke said the jury deliberated about nine hours.

40 years ago (1969)

William V. Turcotte, 80, of South Sixth Street, died Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Brainerd in 1889. He was a partner in Turcotte Bros. Grocery and later in the fuel and feed business.

60 years ago (1949)

District Judge D.H. Fullerton, Brainerd, has released Theodore Pohlman to an Ohio policeman for return to prison at Columbus. Pohlman, who farmed near Aitkin, had escaped from prison 27 years ago where he was serving a term for murder.

80 years ago (1929)

With the announcement of her birthday party at Breezy Point Lodge tomorrow all the world knows that film star Delores Del Rio will be 23 years old. It will be a brilliant event, with Capt. and Mrs. W. H. Fawcett also hosting actress Marie Windsor.

100 years ago (1909)

Brainerd Alderman Deickhaus wanted to know why the circus license was reported to be only $50 when the ordinance called for $100. City Attorney Ryan said the license fee for dog and pony shows is $25, circus and menageries $125, and other tent shows $50.
