Rebels keep on winning

PIERZ - The Fort Ripley Rebels remained in the winners' bracket in the Region 8C tournament by beating the Avon Lakers 8-5 Sunday night.

Winning pitcher Josh Haberman walked the Lakers' leadoff man in the ninth and was relieved by Andy Waletzko. Avon got the potential tying run to the plate but Waletzko got Lincoln Haugen to fly out to end the game.

For the Rebels, Austin Schmolke was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and three runs. Rhett Williamson was 2-4 with a sacrifice, stolen base and run. Ray Austin was 2-4 with a double. Robbie Veith was 2-4 with two runs.

Gary Deters hit a solo home run for Avon and Haugen finished 3-5.

The Rebels will play the winner of the Brainerd/Upsala game next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Avon in the state play-in game.

Avon takes on Buckman at 1 p.m. Saturday at Avon in an elimination game.

Buckman 3, St. Stephen 0

PIERZ - The Buckman Billygoats shut out the reigning Region 8C champions from St. Stephen 3-0 on Sunday in an elimination game.

Todd Robinson blanked the Steves on seven hits, striking out five and stranding 13 runners, nine in scoring position. He walked five and hit one.

Buckman's Gary Boros was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored, Jeremy Monson was 2-4 and Corey Egan was 2-4 with an RBI.

The Steves are eliminated while Buckman will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Avon against the loser of the Fort Ripley/Avon game.

Sobieski 3, Lastrup 2

PIERZ - Nate Olson's one-out RBI single to right in the bottom of the ninth scored Jason King from second base and gave the Sobieski Skis a 3-2 victory over Lastrup and eliminated the Lakers from the Region 8C tournament Sunday.

Olson also got the win on the mound, throwing 140 pitches, striking out four and walking seven. Chad Weiss also went the distance for Lastrup, striking out 10 and walking four (two intentional).

Jon Czech was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI for Sobieski.

Sobieski will play next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Avon against the Brainerd/Upsala loser.

Braves 12, Buckman 1

PIERZ - The Brainerd Braves banged out 18 hits, with eight doubles and two home runs, and smashed the Buckman Billygoats 12-1 in seven innings in the Region 8C tournament Saturday.

Brainerd ended the game via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the seventh when Jason Roepke hit a 3-run homer with one out. Roepke also doubled twice and finished 4-5.

Curt Caughey, drafted from Harding, had four hits, including three doubles.

Jamie LaDouceur had a pair of run-scoring doubles for Brainerd. The Braves' Chris Klabo hit a 2-run homer.

For the Braves, Nate Foss and John Riewer each had two hits and Adam Hardy was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Todd Robinson had two hits for Buckman.

Tony Whitlock went all seven innings to get the win. He had four strikeouts and three walks. Buckman starter Jeremy Monson was tagged with the loss.

Brainerd will play the St. Stephen/Upsala winner at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Pierz.

Buckman will play the St. Stephen/Upsala loser in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fort Ripley 4, Lastrup 1

PIERZ - Brett Kramer pitched a complete-game 4-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks as the Fort Ripley Rebels opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Lastrup Saturday.

Jason Sather had two hits and drove in three runs while Nick Jelacie belted a pair of doubles to lead Fort Ripley.

Losing pitcher Reggie Litke went eight innings, allowing all four runs, nine hits and four walks and fanned three.

Chad Weiss and Rick Schlieman doubled for Lastrup.
