At least four Brainerd slow-pitch softball teams have thus far qualified to participate in national tournaments.
* The Explosion 16-under girls' team will play in the national ASA 18-under women's tournament Thursday through Saturday at Minot, N.D. The team, 17-12 overall, is coached by Bonnie Muzik, Pete Mohs, Heather Jacobson, Mark Neugebauer and Bob Sullivan. The Explosion was runner-up in the USSSA state qualifier at Elk River, won the USSSA state tournament at North St. Paul and was runner-up in the MSF state tournament at Sauk Rapids.
* The 18-under Brainerd Storm girls' team also will play in the national tournament at Minot, N.D. The Storm is making its fourth national trip, its second straight. It has placed as high as fourth in national events. The Storm won the USSSA state title this year, was third in the ASA tournament and has won state titles six of the last seven years. Coach is Mark Tadych.
* The PIGS Class C men's team of Brainerd has qualified for the national tournament Sept. 23-26 at Midland, Texas. Coach is Chris Zaleski.
* Leftyz/MorNorth Mortgage/Shep's Class B men's team has qualified for the World Softball League national tournament Sept. 10-12 at Panama City, Fla. The team played in national tournaments last year in California and in 2000 at Oregon. Coach is Eryk Haapajoki.
