STAPLES -- The third annual Locomotion Talent Promotion, the kickoff to Railroad Days and the Chili Cook Off in Staples, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Centennial Auditorium featuring the Wadena Whirlaways.
The annual talent show is sponsored by Centennial Support Society for its building and equipment fund. This year's proceeds will go to the lighting and rigging fund again. The show will use some of the new sound equipment that was purchased in part by previous fund raisers.
The show will offer a variety of entertainment. The theme for this year's show is "country." This does not mean bluegrass music will be the fare, but it does mean the acts will have a country or western flavor somehow, with the exception of one act.
Acts so far include a piano solo, several vocal solos, a male quartet, a family singing group and the Wadena Whirlaways will be featured on stage square dancing.
Jan Tyrell, a past president and the Whirlaways coordinator for the weekend, said the group will also perform in the community center parking lot for the weekend celebration.
The group has existed for more than 30 years and has danced with other groups from Brainerd, Battle Lake, Park Rapids and Lake George. Members of the square will be Stan and Jan Tyrell, Don and Betty Roline, Maurice and Rita Lenk, and Dave and Marion Mertens. A fifth couple will also participate.
Tickets are on sale at the box office at Centennial Auditorium from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Orders can be made by phone using Visa or MasterCard or other arrangements. Call 894-5416 or 800-213-6877.
