Adam Pelkey of Brainerd Tae Kwon Do has earned his Korean Chung Do Kwan and his Kong Shin Bup Hapkido certificates.
Pelkey, a second-degree junior black belt, is the youngest non-Oriental junior black belt to receive the Chung Do Kwan certificate in the Upper Midwest. He is also the only junior black belt to be certified in Kong Shin Bup Hapkido in the U.S.
LaPrairie to box
Damion LaPrairie of Brainerd will box Antonio Perjonia of Italy in Rome on Saturday in a pro junior lightweight (130 pounds) match. LaPrairie has won 15 of his last 17 fights.
Junior racer competes in Illinois
Fifteen-year-old racer Tommy Murray of Brainerd competed in the IHRA Junior Dragster National Championships at Cordova, Ill., July 14-16. Murray lost in the first round when he ran an 11.10 on a 10.94 dial, due to failure of his clutch belt.
Last weekend Murray competed in the midseason championship at Interstate Dragways near Sabin. Murray finished second when he lost by breaking out in the final round. He ran a 10.47 on a 10.49 dial in.
Murray will compete in the Junior Fest Night of Fire at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, Wis. this weekend.
Zelinske places fourth
Tom Zelinske of Brainerd finished fourth out of 16 competitors in the People to People Sports Ambassadors Deutsch International Wrestling Tournament Germany in June. Zelinske competed at 118 pounds.
