WASHINGTON -- Contract negotiations are continuing at Verizon Communications, but officials of unions representing more than 85,000 workers in 12 eastern states say a strike is possible this weekend.
Union negotiators are seeking higher pay and better benefits and also want to organize wireless workers at Verizon, formerly known as Bell Atlantic.
One union source, discussing the situation on condition of anonymity, said a strike was "very possible," but talks are continuing.
Responding, Verizon spokesman Steve Marcus said: "Both sides are continuing to negotiate in good faith and are working hard to reach an agreement by the deadline ..."
