The Brainerd Police and Fire Civil Service Commission has selected a search firm to assist the city in its search for a police chief.
The search was necessitated by the retirement of Police Chief Frank Ball.
One of three proposals, the firm of Labor Relations Associates, Golden Valley, was recommended for an estimated fee of $8,440. The other bids were from Gleeson and Associates with an estimated $15,000 fee and from Brimeyer Group Inc. with an estimated fee up to $18,500.
Labor Relations Associates was the firm used to hire Brainerd Fire Chief Kevin Mahle. Gleeson and Associates was the firm used to hire Frank Ball in 1990.
Advertising costs alone will run about $3,000-$4,000, said Dan Vogt, Brainerd city administrator.
The search firm, working off recommendations from the Brainerd Fire and Police Civil Service Commission, will handle the work of advertising, screening and testing for the vacant police chief position.
The position will be advertised in The Dispatch, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Star Tribune, Duluth News-Tribune and St. Cloud Times.
The recommendation to hire Labor Relations Associates will go before the Brainerd Personnel and Finance Committee and then the full Brainerd City Council Monday.
Vogt figured that the search firm could start immediately if the city council authorizes funding. The process could be completed sometime in the fall, but Vogt stressed that the search for Ball's replacement will not be done in haste.
"We don't really have a timeline on it, but we're not going to rush through it," Vogt said. "But I am sure they (Labor Relations Associates) will start when the council authorizes them."
Ball announced last month that he was retiring from the Brainerd Police Department to become director of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Alcohol and Gambling Division. His last day was Monday.
Brainerd Police Department Captain Lyman Dahl will serve as acting department head until a police chief is hired.
