LONGVILLE -- Probation Officer Reno Wells reported Tuesday to the county board that people placed on probation have paid $1,880 to the county so far this year in probation supervision fees.
This fee was initiated at the start of this year in an effort to help defray county costs for probation services. The fee is court ordered.
Wells said that as more clients receive orders for probation, he expects the revenue to increase through the year.
The court can order probation services either from the county or state, depending upon the offense and sentence involved.
When people are sentenced to county probation, the court now orders them to pay $10 per month probation service fee to the county throughout the time of their probation. Thus, if a person is assigned three years probation, he or she would pay the county $360 over the three years.
The Cass County Board appointed Commissioners Jim Demgen and John Stranne to meet with Todd, Wadena, Crow Wing, Morrison and Aitkin County representatives to discuss forming a joint county community corrections system.
Demgen and Stranne also have served on a committee with these counties to consider building a regional jail.
Commissioners Stranne and Glenn Witham will meet with Jim Kopacek of Pine River to discuss location of a fence and property lines adjacent to the county recycling and garbage transfer station north of Pine River.
Kopacek has asked to buy a portion of county land adjacent to his property, said Administrator Robert Yochum. Also at issue is a fence the county installed between the two properties, a portion of which Kopacek is believed to have removed.
Yochum said the sheriff's office considers the fence issue a civil, not criminal, matter.
