Vintage style show Saturday highlights Deerwood history

Deerwood was not always called Deerwood. Once known as Withington, the name was changed 125 years ago in 1882.

Members of the Deerwood Lakes Lions have researched the story of "Withington to Deerwood" and are sponsoring a historic style show with a step back in history complete with characters, vintage clothing, antiques and entertainment reminiscent of the 1880s.

The Withington-Deerwood Luncheon and Style Show will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the historic Deerwood Auditorium.

"This is not just your ordinary style show," Rose Puckett, Deerwood Lakes Lions event chair, said in a news release. "Summer visitors, area residents and history buffs also will enjoy the historic narrative of the Deerwood area enhanced by original vintage clothing of the era and a delicious lunch typical of the 1890s."

Jade Hagberg, a local musician, will provide a musical background as costumed members of the Lions Club welcome guests as they gather for the event. Members of the Rhythm of the Rails cast will provide entertainment in costume during the show. A display of vintage clothing, antiques, quilts and "things the way they were" will be on display throughout the auditorium.

The Deerwood Lions Club members are dedicated to improving the quality of life of people locally and internationally. Hosting an event such as this vintage style show raises funds that will used on local projects and will provide a wonderful afternoon of entertainment with a touch of history for those in attendance.

Tickets are available by contacting Kathy Novak (218) 546-5486 or Carroll Kukowski (218) 678-0005.
