One person was killed and four injured -- one critically -- in a two-vehicle collision Sunday at Crow Wing County Roads 22 and 23, near South Long Lake.
Just before 6:45 p.m. a red sedan carrying four people was traveling southbound on Crow Wing County Road 23 when it collided with a black pickup that was westbound on Crow Wing County Road 22.
Crow Wing County Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Lasher said it appeared the driver of the pickup ran through the stop sign on Crow Wing County Road 22 and was struck broadside by the sedan.
One person was killed and four injured in a two-vehicle collision Sunday near South Long Lake. One person in the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene.
The force of the impact carried both vehicles into a ditch near the intersection. The sedan came to rest about 30 feet from the intersection, its hood torn off, front end crumpled and windshield shattered. The pickup came to rest about 50 feet from the intersection, on its side in a stand of trees. Debris from both vehicles littered the roadway and ditches. Firefighters from the Brainerd Fire Department assisted with extricating victims.
One of the occupants of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, Lasher said. Dr. Nick Bernier, director, of medical affairs at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, said two of the people involved in the collision were in satisfactory condition at the hospital late Sunday and two others had been airlifted by North Air Care other hospitals. One of the victims was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale and was reported in critical condition lake Sunday. It was unknown to which hospital the other person was airlifted.
The names of the victims weren't released late Sunday.
Troopers from the State Patrol assisted the sheriff's department with the crash investigation.
Several bystanders also stopped to watch emergency personnel and law enforcement officials work at the collision. Steve Dryburgh, who lives less than a mile from the scene of the collision and was waiting for the scene to be cleared so he could continue home, said every year there seemed to be two or three accidents at the intersection. He said there was a bad accident at the intersection just two weeks ago.

Dryburgh said Crow Wing County should implement more traffic control measures, especially for westbound traffic that can be blinded by the sun when approaching the intersection.
"It's a shame, just sickening" Dryburgh said of the accidents. "They need to put rumble strips down to let people know their coming to the intersection."
