GARRISON -- On Aug. 11 and 12, the Garrison Lions and the Mille Lacs Lake Lions Club will join the Garrison community to celebrate Play Days.
The Garrison Lions will sell brats, hot dogs and soft drinks. The Mille Lacs Lake Lions will offer homemade bakery items and 5 cups of coffee. They also will sponsor the Kiddie Parade at 1 p.m. Aug. 11. Children will assemble at the new playground. Prizes will be awarded to children in costumes.
On Aug. 11, white canes with red tips will be exchanged to all who give a donation. Fifty percent of donations will be used for existing programs for the prevention and/or the reversal of blindness. The remaining 50 percent will remain in the area to strengthen programs that include reading machines, glasses for schools and help to buy medicines.
The white cane is a symbol of the Lions' commitment to the blind for programs that include Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, Children's Eye Clinic and The Eye Research Building at the University of Minnesota.
In 1925, the Lions met Helen Keller's challenge to be the "Knights of the Blind." Since then, Lions and Lioness Clubs have volunteered time and raised money to cure and to prevent blindness.
