20 years ago (1989)

A happy, but tired, Deb Roberts was greeted by cheers as she stepped ashore after the first swim of the length of Gull Lake by a woman. The trip took 6 hours, 16 minutes from Island View Lodge to Cold Spring Resort. Bob Gmeinder swam the lake in 1970.

30 years ago (1979)

(Photo) Mayor C. Elmer Anderson and Miss Brainerd, Linda Eder, helped cut the ribbon for the opening of the Brainerd Realty office. On hand were co-owners Loran Knack, Bert Norquist and Dean Hanson.

40 years ago (1969)

(Photo) Axel Dahl of Nisswa caught this crappie, weighing two pounds and one-half ounce, at East Twin Lake on a minnow bait and weighed it at Nisswa Bait Shop.

60 years ago (1949)

Lady Luck, who has been frowning on the Braves lately, was grinning when they broke a five game losing streak to beat the C-I Rangers, 11-10. The game featured lots of hits, lots of runs and lots of errors.

80 years ago (1929)

The old trading post on West Main Street, a popular trading center and rendezvous in the 1880s was threatened by a grass fire yesterday. The now vacant building was saved by the fire department after a close call.

100 years ago (1909)

When the lights go out on the last performance of the shows tonight carnival week will be ended. Their next stand will be at Stillwater. The park board's share of the proceeds should be near $700, down from over $900 last year.
