Brainerd High School homecoming queen Megan Whalen finally got to go to Disneyland.
She not only satisfied her childhood longing to see Mickey Mouse's home but finished in the top 10 last week in the America's Homecoming Queen competition in Anaheim, Calif.
"I got to go to Disneyland," the Miss Minnesota Homecoming Queen said Tuesday. "I've been begging my parents forever to take me there. I finally got to go."
Hollywood and Venice Beach were also sites that homecoming queens from 48 states (Maine and Vermont were no-shows) toured last week.
More than one contestant however showed up at the pageant with expensive dresses and pageant coaches.
"My dress was $34 and I bought it about an hour before I left," the BHS hockey and tennis player said.
Whalen said contestants delivered a one-minute speech stating why people should come visit their state. A member of the A Cappella Choir, Whalen said she felt at ease on stage.
In a couple of weeks she'll leave for Belmont University in Nashville where she'll pursue a music business degree that could prepare her to work for a record company. The dream of a performing career, even if it's a longshot, is still something she would consider, she said.
