AITKIN -- Kari Thompson was crowned Miss Aitkin recently at the Miss Aitkin Scholarship Pageant in the Aitkin High School auditorium.
First Princess was Laura Fiske, Second Princess was Sarah Just and Miss Congeniality was Kristi Patnode. Thompson also won the talent award, and Stephanie Olson received the baby contest award.
This was the 20th anniversary of the Miss Aitkin Scholarship Pageant. Former queens were recognized, and 13 past Miss Aitkin queens were in attendance.
A tribute was given to some of the Aitkin hometown heroes. Master of ceremonies was Dick Hakes. Bill Hakes sang the national anthem. The 2001 royalty and 2002 candidates danced to "We Shall Be Free" by Garth Brooks.
Auditors Florence Tarr and Wendy Johnson were recognized for 20 years of service. Duane Ganz of Duane's Photography was recognized for photographing the queens since 1987.
Nine contestants vied for the title of Miss Aitkin.
