20 years ago (1989)

Deb Roberts, swim instructor at the Brainerd YMCA, has ordered herself out of the pool and into the lake, where she is training for an end-to-end swim of the length of Gull Lake. She hopes to raise $4,000 in pledges to the Y for her effort.

30 years ago (1979)

A gust of wind at the wrong moment not only stopped Pat Bachman's hopes of setting a new world fire breathing record, but left him with severe facial burns. I retired last night, said Bachman from his home this morning. I quit.

40 years ago (1969)

The Brainerd American Legion baseball team advanced to the sub-district finals against Little Falls with a 7-1 win over Aitkin. Gordie Johnson threw a two-hitter while Dave Cheney scored two runs and stole second twice.

60 years ago (1949)

Dudley Erickson, state liquor control commissioner, said warrants have been issued against five resorters for unlicensed sale of liquor. The only one in the Brainerd area is Art and Myrt's Rendezvous in Lake Shore village, Gull lake.

80 years ago (1929)

H.A. Phillips, winner of the Brainerd Dispatch popularity contest, left yesterday for Minneapolis. He will fly from Wold Chamberlain Field via Northwest Airways trimotor to Chicago, returning the next day. He is the guest of the Dispatch.

100 years ago (1909)

The dining room of the National Hotel opened yesterday for the first time since last winter. Dinner was served to 53. Wise and Carlson have worked a revolution in the appearance of the place and it is now quite inviting.
