DUBUQUE, Iowa Loras College president Jim Collins on Thursday announced the appointment of Chad Walthall to the position of director of intercollegiate athletics.
Walthall, a Staples-Motley High School graduate, will retain his duties as head coach of men's basketball.
Walthall is entering his fifth year of service at Loras. He received his undergraduate degree in physical education from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1991. Two years later, he earned a master's degree in physical education from St. Cloud State University.
Among his many professional experiences, Walthall served as assistant coach at St. Cloud State University, St. Olaf College and Eastern Michigan University.
During his tenure at Loras, Walthall has brought the men's basketball program to upper-division status in the Iowa Conference for the first time since the 1994-95 season. Loras hosted its first conference tournament game and posted the first conference tournament win in school history.
Walthall launched programs for youth basketball and engaged his student-athletes in a variety of local service and grade school reading programs.
In addition to his basketball duties, Walthall has taught in the physical education department, served as head men's golf coach, had development responsibilities and has overseen the Loras College Duhawk Club.
"During the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to visit with several potential external candidates while consulting with a number of athletic professionals," Collins said. "Combining these conversations with the profile of Chad's experiences overall and the success he has enjoyed at Loras, I have full confidence that Chad is the right person at this time to lead the intercollegiate athletics program at Loras."
In accepting the position, Walthall said, "I am grateful for the opportunity given to me by Loras College and President Collins. I am privileged to be working with a tremendous athletic department that has an incredible passion for our student-athletes.
"I look forward to an exciting and successful future with Loras College athletics."
Walthall replaces Greg Capell, who left Loras this month after five years in the position. Capell accepted the job of associate director of athletics at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.
