In 1933 President Franklin Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps. The only CCC camp in Crow Wing County, it was constructed on the shore of Pelican Lake in 1935. The book provides a detailed description of a state forest service CCC camp. The camp could house up to 200 enrollees and staff. Through interviews with camp members and their descendents, CCC camp newspapers, and historical documents from government files, the author recreates what life was like for members of Company 4751 at Camp Pelican.
