So you want the government to run health care?
Let's look at the government's ability to run a business. Their batting average is zero, perhaps even negative zero if there is such a concept.
First, Medicaid and Medicare - both health care type businesses. Both are broke, financial disasters.
Then there's Social Security - it's broke too, another financial disaster waiting to happen.
Then there's the U.S. Postal Service. In recent history it's never been profitable. If it were run like a legitimate business, it would have been gone years ago. It's the only business that would actually increase prices (rates) when their business was falling. Oops, I forgot Obama rescues failing business. So I guess it would have survived anyway.
Then there's Amtrak, the railroad to failure. It's billions of dollars in debt. We've even just spent millions in stimulus funds to build new passenger cars for this failing venture. But Vice President Biden will have new cars to ride on on his way home from Washington.
I defy anyone to name a business that the government has run profitably. There isn't one. And now we're going to let the government run health care? Look at the countries that have tried socialized medicine (yes that's what's on the burner now in Washington). It doesn't work.
If you really believe that the government can run health care, run it better than what we have now, and it won't cost you and your children a fortune, then please call me. I know some great swamp land up near Leader that you might be interested in.
Corporations ruined health care
I am getting tired of hearing the Republicans against government health care reform saying that we have the best health care in the world, a majority of the population is happy with the system and the government isn't capable of managing it. Then why are we so far down on the totem pole in life expectancy and infant mortality compared to other industrialized countries? And why are there so many people that can't afford to get insurance or can't get coverage because they are not perfectly healthy?
I believe the people that are satisfied with our system are the government workers, the rich and the employees of big corporations that make so much they can provide coverage. They will not go bankrupt if a medical problem arises. How many millions cannot afford or cannot get coverage?
I also believe those not capable of running the health system are the profiteering companies like pharmaceuticals, insurance and medical suppliers. They put salaries, bonuses and profits ahead of the well being of the public. When one shot can cost $6,000 or prescriptions can cost hundreds of dollars a month, something is wrong. I see nothing wrong with a doctor making a decent living. It is the big corporations that have ruined the health care business in this country.
