Maria Lee Waffensmith

DEERWOOD -- Maria Lee Waffensmith, 19, Deerwood, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident near Brainerd.

She was born in Crosby on April 17, 1981 to Gregory and Kim (Bjerkness) Waffensmith. She was a 1999 graduate of Crosby-Ironton High School. She was active in the hockey program and was captain of the varsity team. She also was an assistant coach for the CIA hockey team for 15 year olds or younger players. She was a member of the Cascade United Methodist Church in Deerwood. Through the church she participated in a mission experience to assist Jamaicans in establishing a cistern to provide water for a rural school development. She was a summer waitress at the Quarterdeck Supper Club.

Survivors include her parents; a brother, Matthew Waffensmith, Deerwood; a sister, Jenna Waffensmith, Deerwood; grandparents, Dale and Clarice Bjerkness, Ironton, John and Amy Waffensmith, and Dode Waffensmith and Bob Geske, all of Deerwood; paternal great-grandmother, Millie Ferrari, Crosby; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Cascade United Methodist Church in Deerwood with Rev. Mark Marston officiating. Burial will be at the Bay Lake Cemetery in Bay Lake Township. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
