20 years ago (1990)

The sky isn't falling but the ground is sinking between the Brainerd Dairy Queen and the Mississippi River. The problem occurs every time it rains around a 50-year-old storm sewer utility hole, which is 20 feet deep. The city fills it with sand until the next rain.

30 years ago (1980)

The Barn Caf and Blue Ox Co-op were broken into only hours apart. The Barn was entered at 1 a.m. and thieves took a wrench to break into the cigarette machine. The Co-op was hit at 2:15 a.m. and officers chased a suspect who managed to escape.

40 years ago (1970)

The Garrison and Echo school districts in a special referendum both decided to consolidate with the Brainerd School District. Garrison voted 59 to 37 in favor, while Echo voted 23 to 22. The other choice was to join with Crosby-Ironton.

60 years ago (1950)

A group of 12 draftees will be called into service from Crow Wing County on Aug. 2 it was learned today. The call will be the first action of the county draft board since the war started in Korea a month ago.

80 years ago (1930)

Brainerd won a hard fought game at Cloquet by the score of 7 to 6, featuring the heavy hitting of Peterson, who clouted the pill for three doubles and a triple. Swanson pitched well except in the sixth, when a fly ball to center hit a tree, scoring four runs.

100 years ago (1910)

The stern wheel steamer, the "Eagle," carried an excursion party of 50 people from Rice Lake up the Mississippi to a point near mission where a picnic was held. Though the water is low, Arverd Erickson managed to keep the boat in the wettest part of the river.
