PAYNESVILLE - Memorial services will be on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Mound for Raymond C. Koehn, age 95, of Paynesville and formerly of Mound, who passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville. The Rev. Cheryl Williams will officiate. Private graveside services were held at the Mound Union Cemetery, Mound.
Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Arrangements were by the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville.
Ray was born on July 25, 1914, in Woonsocket, S.D., to Charles and Ella (Wolpers) Koehn. He grew up in Winona and graduated from St. Mary's College with a degree in chemistry. Ray was employed as a quality control chemist by General Mills from 1938 until he retired as head of Packaging Research in 1975. He married Florence A. Bailey on Aug. 30, 1940, at the Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church in Minneapolis. The couple lived in Minneapolis and Mound. Ray served on the Mound School Board from 1953 until 1959, the Mound City Council from 1962 until 1963 and mayor from 1964 until 1965. After retirement they moved to Manhattan Beach on Trout Lake north of Brainerd and later the Good Samaritan Apartments in Brainerd. They moved to Paynesville in October 2007.
Ray and Florence enjoyed traveling to Europe and the Holy Land.
Ray was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville, the Brainerd Elks and a former member of the Bethel United Methodist Church and Masons in Mound.
Survivors include his daughter, Judy Elftmann, of Brooklyn Center; son, the Rev. Ric Koehn and his wife Barb, of Paynesville; seven grandchildren, Debbie Anderson, Becky McCallson, Beth Voss, Steve Koehn, Matt Koehn, J.T. Koehn and Rachel Flint; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and sister, Lois White, of Chanhassen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence, on Nov. 29, 2007; son-in-law, Tim Elftmann; and grandson, David Elftmann.
Memorials are preferred.
