I have never met Warren Williams, President of the Bremer Bank in Brainerd, but he has a special place in my heart.
I do know a number of very friendly, helpful employees that work for Bremer Bank at various locations.
I lost my wife a few years ago after a bout with cancer. The compassion and thoughtfulness Mr. Williams demonstrated at that time moved me immeasurably. I cannot express the great appreciation I felt. I wish him well in his retirement.
God Bless Warren Williams
Hold elected officials accountable
I was elected as alderman at large to represent you citizens of Brainerd in Nov. of 2000. Thank you for the support and confidence you provided for me to carry out this important job. I have served and represented the citizens to the best of my ability. I take my oath of office very seriously. Over the last 3 1/2 years there have been good times, and at the same time some rocky ones. This fall there will be four elected officials whose terms will expire. These include my position, alderman at large, Mrs. Nesheim, who has occupied this position for 16 years, 1st Ward Alderman, Mr. Dehen, who has occupied this position for 12 years, and 3rd Ward Alderman, Mr. Scheeler, who was first appointed to this position in 1998.
This city belongs to the people who reside, work, play and worship in this community. There are concerns and issues with our city and it is essential that elected officials provide a well managed city government.
Brainerd city government must be opened up to all citizens and city government should be brought back to them.
Elected officials must be held accountable, fiscally responsible, helpful, friendly and accessible to all citizens. We must always remember the votes we cast can impact the lives of the people who elect us.
Brainerd is a beautiful place to work, play and worship.
Bush and the environment
The next year will be "do or die" for America's environment. The Bush administration is racing to put radical new policies in place that will allow corporations to poison our air, foul our water and devastate our wildlands.
These policies will cripple many of the safeguards that protect us from the big oil, coal, logging, mining and chemical industries. It took over 30 years to put these vital protections in place but by the end of the year, the Bush Administration will have wiped them out.
The scope of the coming attacks is staggering. The Environmental Protection Agency is trying to excuse ExxonMobil from a provision of the Clean Air Act and allow them to spew vastly more pollution into our air, increasing asthma and heart attacks, hospitalizations and premature deaths.
The EPA also plans to treat mercury pollution from power plants as "non-hazardous" even though mercury is one of the worlds most dangerous substances. Non-conforming power plant stacks will keep pumping mercury into our air, where it rains down on lakes and oceans and winds up in the fish that our children eat.
The Forest Service will open all 155 of our national forests to logging without regard for the devastating impacts on the wolves, bears, eagles and other wildlife who depend on these sanctuaries for survival.
The Department of the Interior plans to speed up oil and gas drilling in some of America's most sensitive and irreplaceable ecosystems, including Greater Yellowstone and Utah's world-famous red rock canyons.
The very agencies that are entrusted to protect us from the polluters are now laboring day and night to destroy our environmental laws and our last wildlands at the bidding of big corporations who will walk away with billions of dollars.
The GOP is sweating it out
How phony can you get? Republicans encouraging voters to vote for Ralph Nader in hopes it will take votes away from Kerry/Edwards! They say they're not worried.
Who started what?
There have been numerous complaints about our fighting a war in Iraq under the leadership of President Bush. Some people say that a decent president would not do such a thing. Let me refresh your memory.
Germany did not attack the United States in 1941, we attacked them under the leadership of FDR, a Democrat. We lost 450,000 lives in that war.
North Korea did not attack the U.S., Truman, a Democrat, led us into that war with the loss of 55,000 lives.
North Vietnam did not attack the U.S., John F Kennedy, a Democrat, was in office when we decided to help out South Vietnam and lost 58,000 troops doing so.
Bosnia never attacked us, Clinton, a Democrat, called for an attack on them to save its citizens from a tyrant and make that part of the world safe for democracy. He promised to have our warriors home for Christmas. That was in 1992, we still have troops there and never once have I heard the likes of Tom Brokaw giving a daily recital of how long we have been there or how many troops were lost like he is doing now. Clinton bombed an Aspirin factory in the Sudan, that was making aspirins and nothing else, the night before his impeachment trials were to start. Under Clinton we bombed the Chinese embassy in Bosnia
We did not start the war on terror. They did. We only responded and in doing so we have liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban and crippled al-Qaida. We put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,00 of his own people. We did not start this war with the terrorists, they did on 9/11. Thank you.
