Gordon Northburg will celebrate his retirement after 38 years with Tanner Motors. An open house will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Hall in Brainerd.
Nelson named department president
Kris Nelson was installed as president of the Department of Minnesota American Legion Auxiliary at the 82nd State Convention. She is an honorary member of Brainerd Carl Sydney Hanson Unit No. 255. She has worked with the Brain Science Foundation and the Girls' State program. She served as Unit and District Presidents. She also held many offices and chairmanships on the Unit, District and Department levels. She has chosen "Families Working Together for God and Country" as her focus this year. The president's project is to raise funds for the American Legion Family Hospital Association and Veterans Creative Arts Festival.
Brainerd American Legion Auxiliary
Members of the Brainerd American Legion Auxiliary recently attended the 82nd State Convention in Duluth. Kris Nelson of Brainerd was installed as the 2001-2002 Department of Minnesota president. Trophies and awards for outstanding reports were presented to the Unit: Glen Dornfeld Children and Youth, Laura and Martha Shively. chairmen; and Marie Harding Legislation, Jackie Arevson, chairman. Awards received were the Public Relations Best Unit Program, Shirley Schoonover, chairman; Home Service, most postage stamps, Ann Majerus, chairman; and Poppy Winning Friends Award, Shirley Hauck, chairman. Representing Brainerd as delegates were Kris Nelson, Shirley Schoonover, Doris Stoffel, Dolly Zitur, Kathleen Zelinske and Shirley Hauck.
Annual Aitkin Area Firefighters' competition
The Annual Aitkin Area Firefighters' competition will be held Aug. 5th at Berglund Park in Palisade. Food will be available starting at noon, with the competition beginning at 1 p.m. Seven area fire departments will participate including: Palisade, Aitkin, Crosby, Ironton, McGregor, Pequot Lakes and Hill City. Events are Waterball, Buddy Race, Obstacle Course, Hose Relay, Tug-o-War, Canoe Race and Bucket Brigade.There is no admission charge. Bring your blankets and chairs and come watch the fun. This event is sponsored by the Palisade Fire Department and the Palisade Area Lions Club.
Brainerd Area Shriners
The Brainerd Area Shriners will meet for soup and sandwich at noon Monday. Board of directors meeting will be at 10 a.m.
There will be a senior dance at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd Legion. Music by the Buckaneers.
There will be a senior dance at 1 p.m. Friday at the Deerwood Legion. Music by Joe and Ed.
Ray's Promenaders will square dance from 8-10 p.m. Friday at Baxter Elementary School with Mike McGuire calling. Summer comfort night. Potluck lunch will follow with Ken and Sandra Pederson as hosts.
Moose Lodge activities
Taco night will be Monday. Build your own tacos with eight different toppings. $1 each. Beer is $1 a glass and bloody Mary's, $2.
Women of the Moose
College of Regents and Past Recorders will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Moose Lodge in Brainerd for rides to St. Mathias for dinner.
Brainerd Rotary Club
Darrell Schneider, president of the Brainerd Rotary Club, announced that Rosanne Caughey, president of the Crow Wing County Fair Association, will be the guest speaker for the club's meeting on Tuesday. All Rotary partners and spouses of members are invited to attend. It has been a long standing practice of the club to invite partners on months having five Tuesdays.
Pie and ice cream social
St. Alice and St. Christopher Vocations Committee are sponsoring their 4th annual pie and ice cream social to be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Nisswa City Park. There is a skating facility at the park. An auction of donated items and pies will be held as well as drawings for door prizes. All proceeds from the freewill offering and auction will go to the ongoing support of religious vocations.
"Annie Get Your Gun"
The Lakes Area Senior Activity Center will host a bus trip to the Paul Bunyan Playhouse to see "Annie Get Your Gun" on Aug. 21. Departure time will be 3:45 p.m. at the Franklin School lot and return time will be 11:30 p.m. Trip includes coach bus, dinner at Horseshoe Bay Resort, show and driver tip. Mission Possible Senior Club
The Mission Possible Senior Club will meet at noon Wednesday at the Mission Town Hall.
