20 years ago (1990)

The check was made out to Roberta Bohlke of Nisswa, but Linda Milender of Brainerd is getting half of the $10,000 Minnesota Lottery prize they won. The sisters were rubbing off one of the 12 tickets in the week-old Tic-Tac-Toe game when they hit the winner.

30 years ago (1980)

Brainerd International Raceway is sounds and smells, snarling engines and the stench of burning rubber. For David Edstrom, owner-mechanic of a top fuel dragster those sounds and smells have a special meaning because he is blind.

40 years ago (1970)

A 16-year-old Minneapolis girl was killed when struck by a motorboat on Gull Lake, and an Iowa man may be facing charges as a result of the incident. The girl was swimming alone about 85 yards from shore when the tragedy occurred.

60 years ago (1950)

Pfc. Neil Hoeft, son of the Earl Hoefts of Emma Street, has written his parents from Korea saying his unit is "having a tough time." Serving with the Eighth Army, Hoeft went on to say "Our group is practically surrounded. Help better come in a hurry."

80 years ago (1930)

A leaky gas tank spelled ruin to the motorcycle of Lee Clarkson, Western Union messenger, yesterday. He drove up to the New Brainerd Hotel, parked his motorcycle and was about to deliver a telegram, when flames suddenly shot up and destroyed it.

100 years ago (1910)

C. Erickson, of Maple Street, who works in the tie plant, was breaking a bronco for Gust Erickson last Friday evening. The horse broke away, reared up, threw itself down and broke its neck. The bronco was valued at $100.
