Lightning nip Nimrod

NISSWA - Nisswa scored twice in the first inning and Aaron Jenkins pitched a complete game as the top-seeded Lightning held on to nip No. 2 Nimrod 2-1 in the second round of the Lake and Pine League amateur baseball playoffs Sunday.

Nimrod had runners at first and third with two outs in the ninth before a groundout to second base ended the game.

In nine innings, Jenkins allowed 11 hits and one earned run, walked three and struck out four.

Nimrod's Gunner Johnson also went the distance. He gave up four hits and two earned runs, walked three and struck out 11.

For Nisswa, Mark Germain was 1-3 with a double, RBI and run. Morgan Shepherd was 1-2 with an RBI. Tyler Wittwer was 1-3 with a run. Drew Boland was 1-4.

Saturday's game

Nisswa 15, Verndale 5

NISSWA - Brett Cloutier pitched five scoreless innings and Nate Dickmeyer homered to lead the Lightning past the No. 4 Verndale Bison 15-5 in the opening round of the playoffs Saturday.

Cloutier allowed four hits, struck out 11 and walked none.

Dickmeyer was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and four RBIs. Mark Germain was 4-5 with a double and two RBIs. Scott Kimman was 2-2 with three walks. Tony Parrish was 2-3 with two RBIs. Aaron Jenkins was 2-6 with two RBIs. Bronson Shepherd walked four times.

David Berndgen earned a save. In three innings he gave up seven hits and four earned runs, struck out three and walked one.

Verndale pitchers combined to walk 12 and hit three batters.
