Derek Harris, captain of the Fergus Falls High School boys' golf team, on Monday signed a national letter of intent to play for Central Lakes College in Brainerd, which won the national championship in June.
Harris joins Justin Speer of Ottertail and Joe Kavanaugh of East Gull Lake in a freshman class that will join one of the country's leading Division III returnees, Theo Frentzos of Elk River.
"We are pleased to have this five-year letter-winner and talented tournament athlete coming to CLC," said Jim Russell, the Division III Coach of the Year in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
"He won four high school invitationals last spring, finished in the top 10 in the Northwoods Collegiate Classic in Alexandria, and won the Minnesota PGA junior tour at The Pines, shooting a 69," Russell added.
"He's going to be a hard worker in a competitive unit that enjoys the game. Derek has shown what he can do, that he has qualities essential to be a successful golfer."
Last spring Harris won the Otter, St. Cloud, Detroit Lakes and Bemidji invitationals. He became the first FFHS golfer to win the meet since the mid-1990s.
