Deep Portage offers August programs

HACKENSACK -- Deep Portage Conservation Reserve near Hackensack will conduct naturalist programs from 1-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Aug. 17.

Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children and Deep Portage members. Programs include:

Tuesday -- Northern Tamarack Bog Hike. During the one-mile hike participants will see pitcher plants, sundew, bog rosemary, leatherleaf and other wetland plants.

Aug. 3 -- Orienteering Basics. Tune up your compass and map reading skills. Deep Portage will supply the equipment. The class includes a short indoor portion, followed by activity in the woods.

Aug. 9 -- Pond Life Exploration. Bring water boots to wade in Bass Pond and Big Deep Lake looking for macroinvertebrates.

Aug. 10 and 17 -- Treetop Tower Hike. Hike up the 55-foot Deep Portage tower.

Aug. 16 -- A Family Canoeing Trip on the Boy River. Paddle up the Little Boy River. Deep Portage will supply canoes, paddles and life jackets. Participants should bring water bottles, shoes that can get wet and sunblock.

Crosslake fireworks raffle winners listed

CROSSLAKE -- Following are the winners of the Celebrate America Crosslake fireworks raffle.

$500 Reed's Market certificates, Judy Nybakken and Patrice Stefan; Crosswoods Golf family membership, The Great Indoors Furniture Co.; lunch once a week for a year at Subway of Crosslake, Kathy Fyle; $250 Reed's Market certificates, Dan Seidl and Ellen Vavrina; Lakes Area Gallery and Frame Shoppe $250 framed art, Rick Koch; Golden Eagle golf package, Dave Norgren; Manhattan Beach Lodge package, Diane Dorr-Ruzin.

Winners were announced Friday. Dollars raised from the raffle went toward the 2005 Crosslake fireworks.

Garrison Lions to participate in Garrison Days

GARRISON -- The Garrison Lions will participate in Garrison Days Saturday and Sunday.

Lions members collected beads during Mardi Gras and will continue this theme as they throw beads from their float in the parade.

They will have a food tent where they will cook brats and hot dogs, as well as host a bake sale with homemade goodies. Members will sell crafts and Radda knives.

All proceeds from this event are used for Lions' charitable causes.
