Brainerd wins two at tournament

The Brainerd VFW baseball beat Menahga 18-0 and Little Falls 12-1 on the first day of the District 6, North Subsection tournament at Sauk Rapids.

In the first game, Brainerd's Matt Siegel and Jason Thompson combined for the shutout. Brainerd's offense collected 11 hits with Carl Sneep, Steve Berndgen and Nick Jelacie each finishing with two. Siegel, Sneep and Ryan Peltoma had doubles.

In other first-round action Sartell beat Onamia 10-0, Sauk Rapids beat Little Falls 3-2 in 11 innings.

In the second game Sneep pitched a complete game scattering five hits over five innings.

Siegel finished 2-for-4 with a grand slam home run. Morgan Impola and Sneep were both 2-3 to help Brainerd (28-10) advance to the third round. There they'll face Sartell 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sauk Rapids.

Other second round scores were Onamia over Menahga 14-8, Sartell over Sauk Rapids 7-6 in eight innings.

Tuesday's other games will be Sauk Rapids vs. Onamia 11 a.m. The winner of that game plays the loser of the Brainerd-Sartell game.
