EXTRA CREDIT
Kristina Carlson, the daughter of Rod and Sharon Carlson of Brainerd, received a master of education degree from St. Mary's University of Minnesota. Carlson, a 1995 Brainerd High School graduate, also received a P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund sponsored by Chapter DV, a Brainerd chapter. She currently is teaching at St. Michael Elementary School.

THEFT -- Theodore Wooden, 400 block of Laurel, Saturday reported his vehicle stolen.

WALKER -- Judge David Harrington July 19 dismissed the case against one person in Cass County District Court and issued a stay of adjudication for the other in the cases against a Walker couple accused of using a false out-of-state address to avoid paying higher Minnesota taxes.

Little Falls man arrested on drug charges
ROYALTON -- A 23-year-old rural Little Falls man was arrested Friday after a Morrison County Sheriff's deputy stopped his vehicle in Bellevue Township north of Royalton and found about 4.5 grams of methamphetamine.

80 years ago (1924) - Between 5,000 and 6,000 chickens, shipped by farmers in Crow Wing County and Aitkin County made up a carload that started on its way to market from the Brainerd station Monday evening.

ONAMIA -- A man killed Saturday in a one-vehicle accident in Mille Lacs County has been identified as Adam Jerome Shakespeare, 27, of Onamia.

Robert Enerson, 66-year-old resident of Little Falls, Minn., formerly of Clearbrook, Minn., died Saturday, July 24 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 28 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls, Minn., with Rev. David Steffenson and Rev. Robin Nice officiating.

Doris Holcombe
Doris Holcombe, 92, formerly of Nisswa, died Saturday, July 24, at Pierz Villa Care Center in Pierz. Doris was born October 19, 1911, in Staples, the daughter of Dors and Dori (Maerten) Lynch. After high school she continued her education and became a registered nurse. She married Wilbur Holcombe in 1934 at Verndale. To this union one son, Jon, was born. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd, but spent most of her time as a wife and mother. She loved music and playing the organ. She also enjoying art, gardening, yard work and keeping her house.

Open Forum
I am writing today to let you know of an exciting new organization starting in the Brainerd area, it is called the Committee to Open City Government in Brainerd. But before I get into that let me tell you a little about myself. I have owned and operated the Eclectic Cafe, a small coffee shop, in downtown Brainerd for the last seven years.

OUR OPINION: SEWERS
How the county addresses these sewer issues will have considerable impact on what our region will be like in the next 10 to 20 years. Crow Wing County's population continues to grow and unless plans are started now we may be ill prepared to handle influx of new people.

Today the 900th American soldier died in Iraq. And for what? The polls seem to show a stunning disregard for the dead and dying and their families. Administration lies are ignored, massive deficits are overlooked, and a fundamentalist attorney general trashing the constitution evokes no outrage or even concern.
