The tastes of Minnesota are plentiful at the Crow Wing County Fair. One whiff - away from the barns, of course - carries a variety of aromas from barbecued brats to fried mini-doughnuts. About 400 monster ears are consumed at the fair daily.
30 years ago (1980)
Want to buy a kitchen for $5,000? You won't be able to prepare meals in it but the contribution will help the historical society on the last leg of its fundraising campaign to renovate the old county jail. Several rooms are being sold and named for donors.
40 years ago (1970)
Milo Blanich of Ironton was elected state commander of the Minnesota American Legion during the 52nd annual convention, which was held at Moorhead. Blanich, who served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, is a long-time member of the Ironton Legion.
60 years ago (1950)
An infield home run by Jim Smith with the bases loaded in the third inning, gave Brainerd's DeMolay squad a tight 12-11 victory over Aitkin. Ron Hess led the hitting, going four-for-five, and Herb Thiesse fanned seven and walked six for the win.
80 years ago (1930)
Some might say that Keith Williams, of Ideal Township, is a shrewd businessman; other might say he was combining business with pleasure. While out berry picking in Sibley Township he came across a den of seven wolf cubs, killed them and got a $42 bounty.
100 years ago (1910)
F.S. Parker is the proud owner of handsome Oldsmobile special, a 1910 with 40 HP and four cylinders. It is a five-passenger machine with all the latest appliances and improvements. It was purchased in Detroit and came through the Great Lakes to Duluth.
