Shriner rally scheduled Saturday

Rev up your engines, motorcyclists.

It's time for the second annual Paul Bunyan Shriner Rally, scheduled for Saturday. Registration will from 9-11 a.m., with the ride starting at 11 a.m. sharp at the Paul Bunyan Bar and Grill in Baxter.

Motorcyclists will ride 135 miles in the Brainerd lakes area, with stops at Zorbaz on Gull Lake, Maucieri's in Crosslake, The Bridge Tavern in Crosby and Deerstand in Deerwood.

Ron Burnard, president of Brainerd's Shriner Club, said others are welcome to drive their own vehicles and follow the motorcycles. Burnard said there will be a rally at all the stops.

The ride is expected to be finished by 5-5:30 p.m. At 8 p.m. the entertainment will start at Paul Bunyan Bar and Grill. Entertainment includes music by Silent Partner. There also will be an auction of several items, including a fishing trip to Mazatlan, Mexico, etched glass murals and gift certificates.

Cost for a single rider is $20; double rider, $30.

Proceeds from the event will go to the children at the Shriners Hospital in Minneapolis. Burnard said the local club serves more than 100 Shriner children who live in the Brainerd lakes area.

Costs to ride in the rally are $20 for a single rider and $30 for a double rider, which includes entertainment. Burnard said there will be a $5 donation to see Silent Partner. People can register by getting a form online at www.paulbunyanshrinerally.com or by calling (866) 336-2617.

Burnard encourages people to arrive early with their registration forms on Saturday. Burnard expects more than 200 riders this year. Last year there were around 125 bikers and $4,000 was raised. Burnard hopes to raise between $8,000 to $10,000 this year.

Burnard encourages people to join in on the rally and support the Shriners Hospital to help the children.

Shriners Hospital was begun in 1923 and serves children from all over the world, but primarily from Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, western Wisconsin, the upper peninsula of Michigan and in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the northwestern part of Ontario in Canada.

The hospital, which treats children with orthopedic disabilities and burns, does not charge patients or families for treatment. It relies on donations.
