Donald F. Howitz, 80, Brainerd, passed away at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd on Thursday, July 23, 2009. He was born May 28, 1929, in Langdon, N.D., to William and Frances (Gilbertson) Howitz. He married Patricia Noden on Aug. 25, 1957, in Ada, Minn. He was a United States Army veteran. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd for 50 years where he was chairperson of the Jolly Free Timers. He taught English at Franklin and Washington Schools in Brainerd for 36 years. He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for over 25 years. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, Elks Club, American Legion Post No. 255 and volunteered at the Crow Wing County Historical Society. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughter, Barbara (Jess) Fordyce, Minnetonka, Minn.; two sons, Michael (Anna Schroder), Shoreview, Minn., Mark (Linda), Crystal, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Thomas Fordyce, Lauren Fordyce, William Howitz, Andrew Howitz, Peter Howitz, Rebekah Howitz and Sarah Howitz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William Howitz and Thomas Howitz.
Services will be held on Monday, July 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Dave Holte officiating. Inurnment will be in Vaale Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday, July 26, 2009, from 3-5 p.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
