Public Immunization Clinics are given through Crow Wing County Health Department. There is a minimal charge for vaccine but no one will be denied if unable to pay. Brainerd -- Tues., August 14, 8:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m. and Tues., August 28, from 8:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m. at Crow Wing County Health Department, 219 Laurel St., Brainerd, MN.
Pequot Lakes -- Fri., August 10, at Lakes Area Family Center from 1-3:15 p.m.
Crosby -- Fri., August 3, at the St. Joseph School in Crosby, 2-3:30 p.m.
Emily -- Fri., August 3, at the Emily City Hall, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening -- There is a grant that will pay for an annual pap smear and mammogram for women who qualify. A woman must be over 40 and meet generous income guidelines. If you qualify and have insurance that covers this procedure but you have a deductible, MBCCCP will pay the deductible. Freshstart Smoking Cessation Class
Is it time for you to quit smoking? The best way to have children who do not smoke is to set a good example. Are you ready to QUIT? Quit Smoking Classes will be offered by Crow Wing County Health Department. Freshstart is a quit smoking program by the American Cancer Society. This program is open to anyone and is a series of four classes. A fee of $15.00 is charged for the materials. The next class will be offered on Monday, August 6, 2001 from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and the following three Mondays: August 13, 20, 27. Child, teen checkup clinics
The Crow Wing County Health Department will be holding Child and Teen Checkup clinics in Brainerd on Wed., August 8 from 8:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. and on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Checkups are by appointment only.
The Child and Teen Checkup is a series of checkups for apparently well children and young adult in Crow Wing County from six months up through 20 years of age. The purpose of the checkup is to find health problems or deviations of growth and development and have them corrected before they become serious.
A full Child and Teen Checkup includes hearing and vision testing, height and weight check, simple laboratory tests, a physical exam, a growth and development assessment, a nutrition review and immunizations.
The Child and Teen Checkup is conducted by trained public health nurses at the Crow Wing County Health Department. The Child and Teen Checkup assists the parent to promote the health of the child. If the screening reveals a health problem requiring further diagnosis or treatment, parents are notified and assistance is offered for scheduling appointments and transportation if needed. The Child and Teen Checkup fee is based on the family's income. No one will be turned away because of lack of finances. Crow Wing County Health Department also administers the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The WIC program provides nutrition education, referrals to medical providers and vouchers for specific foods for pregnant, post-partum and breast-feeding women, infants, and children up to age 5. Clinics are held the second Friday of every month in Pequot Lakes, the first Thursday and following Friday of the month in Crosby, and several days in Brainerd.
The income threshold is fairly high. For example, a family of four with an income of $48,540 may be eligible for the program. To inquire or make an appointment, call WIC at (218) 824-1073.
