Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Brainerd will sponsor its first "Sports Day" Aug. 16 and 17. That will feature men's and women's slow pitch softball tournaments and a tug-of-war contest.

Editorial: Brainerd's Fire and Police Departments deserve praise for the work they turned in during the Iron Exchange Building fire. The firemen, under the leadership of Chief Ray Shortridge, conquered a stubborn and raging fire which could have endangered a large part of downtown Brainerd.
40 years ago (1960)
The Class of 1935, graduate of Washington High School held a reunion of their class on July 16 at the Brainerd Country Club. Robert Sheflo, Sr. was general chairman of the event. Charles Knedel, president of the Senior Class, acted as Master of Ceremonies.
60 years ago (1940)
With the final work being completed today on a new flag pole in front of the building, WPA finishes a year's project in renovating and building additions to the Armory in Brainerd. The flag pole is 65 feet high and stands at the corner of Fifth and Laurel streets in front of the building.
80 years ago (1920)
No, for the 100th time no, it wasn't the Brainerd first team that played the reorganized combination of an Ironton team and was defeated 31 to 1. It was a pickup all Brainerd Nine which had the nerve to stick to the finish. The Little Falls Transcript remarked the game was so bad it was good.
100 years ago (1900)
At the annual School Meeting in District No. 5, I.B. Porter was elected Clerk. The Treasurer's report showed receipts for the year amounting to $253.53. Disbursements amounting to $205. A tax of $240 was voted for the ensuing year.
