MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Robert Bell of Pierz tied for fourth place in the 106th MGA Amateur Championship that ended Wednesday at Mendakota Country Club.
Bell finished with a 1-over-par 217 total. He shot 76 Monday, 73 Tuesday and finished with a 4-under-68 Wednesday.
Tom Hoge of Village Green won the title with a 213, followed by Travis Ross of Rush Creek and Jon Sauer of Tianna Country Club in Walker with 215s.
Duluth hires ex-major league skipper
DULUTH - The Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League have hired former major league manager Terry Collins as their new field manager.
He replaces Adam Stahl who was let go after two-plus years with the club. Collins' first game was Thursday night against Alexandria at Wade Stadium.
Collins managed the Houston Astros from 1994-1996 and Anaheim Angels from 1997-1999, compiling a 444-434 record. He also has 11 years of minor-league coaching experience and managed Team China in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Collins' agreement with the Huskies is non-binding. He will be allowed to leave if he gets another major league job.
