Such is the lure of the Brainerd lakes area that Sigfried Stier took a pay cut to become the first Crow Wing County personnel coordinator. Stier said a merger threatened his former position in Alexandria and he wanted to stay in central Minnesota.

Kansas City civic leader and businessman Dutton Brookfield, 61, died of complications from burns he received in a fire at his Pine Beach Peninsula home on Gull Lake on May 28. His wife Betty is still recovering from burns she received.

(Photos) Bill Miller, Minneapolis, took this 9-9 walleye out of Whitefish Lake using a strip-on spinner and minnow. Rick Bollig, Brainerd, caught this 5-12 rainbow trout out of Strawberry Lake using a Flatfish lure. Both weighed in at Nisswa Bait Shop.
60 years ago (1949)
Members of the county board were non-committal to demands made by a large delegation of residents and businessmen that repairs be made immediately to the Mill Avenue bridge. Commissioners were charged with years of talk but doing nothing.
80 years ago (1929)
Archer Crandall defeated Virgil Quanstrom in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, on the Gregory Park courts to enter the semi-finals of the men's singles tennis championship of Brainerd. Crandall will meet "Bie" Ericcson in the semis. A doubles tournament will follow.
100 years ago (1909)
If you want to see chain lightning at close quarters go to the Northwestern Hospital and see them turn it out on their new x-ray machine. It cost nearly $700 and is used to subdue pain in electrical surgery.
