Left-hander Ethan Branum pitched seven-plus solid innings as second-seeded Brainerd defeated No. 3 Nisswa 8-5 in the North Subdistrict 6 Legion tournament Wednesday night at Mills Field.
Branum struck out four in 7 1/3 innings with three walks and gave up four hits. Right-hander Brett Kramer finished.
The victory moved Brainerd into the winners' bracket game against Little Falls at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mills Field. The winner earns the subdistrict's top seed for next week's district tournament at Bemidji. The loser will have to win at 7 p.m. Thursday to advance to the district.

Trevor Howard had three hits and three RBIs to lead Brainerd. Kramer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Josh Haberman 2-5 with a run, Jake Caughey 2-5 with a run and a double and Brandon Shaw was 1-3 with two runs for Brainerd.

LITTLE FALLS - Top-seeded Little Falls snapped a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth and held on to edge No. 4 Park Rapids 7-6 in the North Subdistrict 6 tournament Wednesday.
Little Falls scored once in the fifth to go ahead 5-4 before Ben Hanowski hammered a two-run homer in the sixth. Park Rapids' Kevin McMorrow hit a two-run home run with two out in the eighth for the final score.
Andrew Lange was 3-for-4 with two doubles for Little Falls, Hanowski finished 2-3 with a double, Logan Kalis was 2-5 with two triples and Riley Hirsch was 2-5.
Joe Rydeen pitched 7 2/3 innings to get the win. He struck out five, walked one and allowed nine hits and four earned runs.
Hirsch picked up a save. He pitched 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
