The Brainerd VFW baseball team wasted little time in dispatching its two opponents on the opening day of the North Subdistrict 6 tournament at Adamson Field Monday.
Top-seeded Brainerd beat No. 4 Menahga 15-0 and followed that with a 15-5 drubbing of Wadena. Both games lasted five innings.
In the opening game Kyle Crocker had a double and drove in two runs while Rob Veith had a hit, walked twice, scored twice and had three RBIs. Besides picking up the win on the mound Dan Bendzick had a hit and drove in a run for Brainerd.
"Offensively we were very patient at the plate," Brainerd assistant coach Tim Martin said. "We had a combined 12 walks and hit batters. Mix in the seven hits we had and 15 runs is the result."
Brainerd blew the second game open in the fourth inning when Nate Smolke and Brandon Shaw both hit two-run homers, turning a 7-5 Brainerd lead into an 11-5 route.
Smolke finished with two hits and three RBIs while Shaw had two hits, scored three times and drove in three runs. Tyler Alters went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Brainerd's Joel Martin picked up the win on the mound as he gave up just one hit over 2 2/3 innings of relief for starter Trevor Howard.
"The two big hits by Nate and Brandon gave us a cushion," Martin said. "We are very happy to be in the position we're in by winning the first two games."
In other games Wadena beat Crosby 12-11 while Crosby came back to beat Menahga in the loser's bracket. Crosby and Wadena will play at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the winner facing Brainerd at 12:30 p.m.
