Cass County authorities reported Monday that the body of a man reported missing on Steamboat Lake, north of Walker, on Thursday night was recovered from the lake early Monday morning.

Toxic chemical: Seeking a solution
Brainerd and Baxter city officials will meet Tuesday morning in St. Paul with officials from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to discuss potential causes for the elevated levels of a toxic chemical found in Brainerd's treated wastewater released into the Mississippi River, a MPCA spokesperson said Monday.

PINE RIVER - Marion Dahl, age 87, of Pine River, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center, Pine River. She was born Nov. 18, 1919, in Minneapolis to LeRoy and Ruby Cramer. She was a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church, Swanburg, and Pine River Legion Auxiliary. Marion was loved and will be deeply missed by her family.

Margaret Mae DeRosier, age 90, resident of Brainerd, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. Margaret was born on November 18, 1916, in St. Mathias Township to Wesley and Mary Gilson.

Henry Motis
CROSBY - Henry Motis, age 90, died July 19, 2007, at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center. He was born on Dec. 11, 1916, in New Effington, S.D., to Frank and Mary (Mrnak) Motis. He was a World War II Army veteran and member of the Myrin-James American Legion Post 443, Ironton, and Brainerd VFW.

Open Forum
Regarding the individual from Nisswa who proposed a seven-step plan to destroy our lifestyle and our capitalistic society. I think a good plan for him would be to go and live in North Korea for seven months and each month work on fine-tuning each of the seven steps. When (and if) he comes back I think he will have a new appreciation for this great country of ours and not be so anxious to socialize it.

OUR OPINION:CONGRESS
No one ever accused the U.S. Congress of being a fount of common sense and our elected representatives continue their befuddling behavior as they reallocate our tax dollars back to us.

I received a letter from my health insurance carrier saying my rates are going up 25 percent. This premium change is due to a general rate change that applies to all insureds in our state. Bush said in his speech in Detroit last week that inflation is low. When is the last time he had to pay for anything himself? My income isn't going up 25 percent.
