Minneapolis Tribune of the North
During the last few years I have noticed the Dispatch has been trying to become the liberal Mpls. Tribune of the North. Your enamored treatment of the so called war protesters was too much and then when the backlash was just getting started and was too much for you to handle out comes, "We're cutting this off now." So much for freedom of speech. As a Vietnam era veteran I know how much this type of people support the troops. What a joke.

OUR OPINION: PAY RAISES
As much as the Brainerd City Council might have liked to reward the work of Police Chief John Bolduc with a pay increase, it made the right decision Monday to reject the proposal that would have raised his salary by $5,572 a year. It's a matter that can be revisited at a later date.

Rhythm of the Rails looks at good old days
I am so very impressed with the wonderful outdoor theatre presentation of Rhythm of the Rails which is a historical as well as hysterical experience. The very talented performers portray several characters from Brainerd, Pillager, Little Falls and other area towns. The railroad days are presented vaudeville-style depicting places and personalities of the olden days.

Story was good for a laugh
One of my favorite features in the Brainerd Dispatch is its excellent selection of comic strips and cartoons. Medical folks have extolled the health benefits of humor for years. A chuckle a day can serve to relieve tension and reduce blood pressure.

Open Forum
The U.S. Department of Commerce reports tax revenues have risen 3.5 percent over last year. Minnesota revenues have also risen above previous projections and it appears that we've turned the economic corner. Presidents Reagan and Kennedy followed this same prescription, knowing that lowering taxes spurs economies and actually increases tax revenues.

The Dispatch's excellent coverage
Your Tuesday edition printed a story on page 9A writing of the tribulations of a young miner in the west African forests of Guinea whose sweat-covered efforts uncovered a 182 carat diamond.

Safer but not safe
The ink was barely dry on the Sept. 11 commission's report as Republican and Democratic campaign strategists launched their respective spins on the story. "Blame the opposition party" is the primary objective of this exercise and voters can expect to hear plenty of partisan rhetoric at the major party conventions this summer. That's a pity.

Should the U.S. have waited?
This morning's headline in the Dispatch was "U.S. death toll in Iraq 900." On June 7, 1944, the headline would have been "Death toll on Normandy beaches over 6,000." How many of those lives would have been saved if we had stopped Hitler before he captured all of Europe? Saddam Hussien had a similar goal to capture all of the Middle East. Should we have waited until he was successful then made Normandy-like landings on the beaches of one of the Arab nations he controlled?

Don't let walleyes give you the slip
Tom Backer doesn't let much slip by him, especially when he's armed with slip bobber rigs. The North Dakota walleye pro uses slip bobbers to target summertime walleyes in wood and weeds at Devil's Lake and elsewhere. Slip bobbers are effective from Memorial Day to the end of summer. The key is the right rig in the right place at the right time.

Perspective is everything on visit to heron rookery at Pigs Eye Lake
Things always must be put into perspective. While winding through a maze of highway construction, railroad tracks, pole buildings and piles of scrap that dotted both sides of a pot-holed gravel road, I was glad to be following someone familiar with the area. I patted myself on the back for having the wisdom to rendezvous southeast of downtown St. Paul before heading to our final destination at Pigs Eye Lake.

The case of the missing muskie
I'm sure some of you have seen the big muskie that was in the window at Ernies on Gull Lake. It was a 51-3/4 incher that tipped the scales at 40 pounds. Chris Holmes caught the fish out of my boat in August 2001, and it was the most exciting moment of my hunting and fishing career.
