Baxter 11-U team wins state title

The Baxter 11-U baseball team won the nine-team Cal Ripken Baseball Minnesota state championship tournament last weekend in Baxter.

On Friday, Baxter beat Barnesville 16-6 and Litchfield 11-1.

Saturday, Baxter defeated Bemidji 6-3 and East Twins from St. Paul 4-2.

The championship game was played Sunday and Baxter defeated Barnesville 6-1. Baxter will advance to the regional tournament July 31-Aug. 6 in Denver.

Baxter's batting average for the tournament was .468.

Hitting highlights for the weekend included Hanson Devine going 8-for-11 (.727), Josh Howieson 9-15 (.600), Luke West 7-13 (.538), Jack Geraets 7-13 (.538) and Cole Foss 9-17 (.529). Foss hit two home runs and Allen Jevning one.

Jevning pitched a 6-inning complete game in the championship game, giving up four hits and one run against Barnesville.

Baxter is coached by Craig West, Sam Foss and Greg Selisker and is sponsored by State Farm Insurance and Dondelinger Chevrolet.

On July 11, Baxter won the bronze division of the 12-under Bemidji tournament. Baxter lost to Grand Rapids 14-4 and Heartland 9-2 before defeating Bemidji 5-0 to move into the Bronze division.

In the bronze division Baxter beat Stephen-Argyle 11-10 and Bemidji 11-U 5-2.
