Posted: Wednesday, July 22, 2009

PEQUOT LAKES - The Dru Sjodin Purple Elephant 5K/10K Run/Walk is planned for Aug. 15 at the Trailside Park in Pequot Lakes.

The event, conducted in honor of Sjodin, focuses on raising awareness and upholding intolerance of sexual violence against women and children while promoting healthy lifestyles.

Sjodin, a 2000 Pequot Lakes High School graduate, was 22 when she was abducted outside a Grand Forks, N.D., shopping mall and murdered by a convicted sex offender.

The Purple Elephant logo is used in commemoration of a tattoo Sjodin had to show her love for elephants. She admired the strength, compassion and love that the adults showed for their young. The event benefits the Dru Sjodin Scholarship Fund.

The course will begin and end at the Trailside Park in Pequot Lakes. Start times are 9 a.m. for the 5K/10K running and 9:15 a.m. for the 5K walkers.

Registration is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. Registration will be in the gazebo next to Dru's Memorial Garden.

Register online at www.drusvoice.com or send a check payable to Dru Sjodin Run/Walk and signed entry form to 5627 Green Circle Drive No. 114, Minnetonka, MN 55343.

Entry includes a commemorative T-shirt for all participants and refreshments at the finish line. Awards will be given to the top three running finishers in each division and gender at the end of the race.

Please no pets, boards, bikes or blades on the course.

NTRRC to host model train show and flea market

CROSSLAKE - The Northern Trackers Railroad Club in Crosslake will host its second annual Model Railroad Show and Flea Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Crosslake Community Center.

Admission is $3 for adults and kids 12 years and under are free.

People may tour the club's signature 30-by- 30 HO scale model train layout that replicates the logging and mining industry in the lakes area from 1905-1915. Small steam locomotives with realistic sounds are pulling mining cars loaded with iron ore and logging cars with miniature logs. Towns such as Brainerd, Merrifield, Nisswa, Pine River, Crosby, Bemidji and others have buildings that are "scratch built" from actual photos of the early 1900s. This replica is one of four operating model train layouts on display.

Trains and train equipment will be for sale, operating model train layouts will be on display, and a clinic on model building and door prizes will be offered. Lunch items will be available for purchase.

Keeping the signs clear allows emergency response vehicles to quickly locate your address in the event of an emergency. In a news release, Wetzel said not keeping the signs clear is a violation of county ordinance and along with putting the resident at risk could result in a citation and fine.
