BAXTER -- Eugene V. Sundberg, 76, Baxter, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd
He was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Brainerd to Hugo and Hilfred Sundberg. He received an early diploma in February 1943 from Brainerd High School and entered the Army Air Corps. He was an aerial gunner and then entered the cadet training program as a pilot. He served in the Eighth Air Force as a command pilot on a B17 Flying Fortress, flying missions over Germany. He married Betty Jean Sedlock on Feb. 2, 1946. He graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry and practiced in Brainerd for 42 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, serving as trustee, deacon and chairman of the council. He was a Sunday school teacher and a teacher of Bethel Bible Studies. He was a board member of Salvation Army, past president of the Brainerd Lions Club, Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge, charter member of the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club and on the board of directors of the YMCA. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He belonged to the Crow Wing County Flying Club, the Silver Eagles Club, Pilots for Christ and the Antique Airplane Association. He was a member of the National and Minnesota Optometric Association and past president of the Northland Arboretum. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Airplane and Owners Pilots Association.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandra Thomason, Hemet, Calif., Carol Nelson, Brainerd, and Judy Carmick, Germantown, Md.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A brother, Lawrence Sundberg, died earlier.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Andrew Smith officiating. Burial with military honors by the American Legion will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and an hour before services Monday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church, Brainerd YMCA or the Northland Arboretum.
