GRAND RAPIDS - Edith Lucy (Burnham) Schrader, 97, formerly of Brainerd, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2009, in Grand Rapids, Minn.
Edith was born on May 2, 1912, on a farm in Bigelow Township, Nobles County, Minn., to Charles and Augusta (Wass) Burnham. She attended rural school in Nobles County and when the family moved into Worthington she finished grade school and high school there. She graduated from Worthington High School in 1930. Edith took three years of nurses training at Methodist Kahler Hospital in Rochester, Minn., and earned her RN in 1934. After graduation from nursing school, she worked for several years at the Kahler Hospital and also at the Rochester Hospital. Edith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Worthington.
Edith married Thomas Schrader on May 30, 1934. Thomas worked for the Federal Wildlife Conservation Department and they moved throughout the country 28 times during their married life. After her husband's retirement, they moved from Boston to Brainerd where they owned and operated Elta's Antique Shop for 13 years.
Edith is survived by her three children, Thomas (Karen) of Anchorage, Alaska, Charles (Darlene) of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Marian (William) O'Connell of Middletown, R.I.; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Clinton Burnham and Robert Burnham; and two sisters, Maudie Johnson and Lillian Holcomb.
A funeral service for Edith has been planned for Monday, July 20, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home. Pastor Lilja Behr will be officiating the service. Friends may call Monday from noon until the time of the service. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.
