WATERLOO -- The Brainerd Mighty Gulls scored six runs in the last three innings Wednesday but still fell to the South Division-leading Waterloo Bucks 9-7.
The Gulls scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth but a 9-2 lead was too much to overcome.
Mike Ziroli, who has a 2.36 ERA and leads the Northwoods League with 62 strikeouts, had perhaps his worst outing of the summer. The Iowa State right hander allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits, while walking three and striking out only two.
Designated hitter Ryan Wickham led the Gulls 12-hit attack by going 3-for-4, while Luke Appert, Joe Urban and Mike Osequera all recorded two hits.
Josh Arteaga finished 3-for-3 for Waterloo and upped his season average to .367, while Ryan Brunner was 3-for-5 and is hitting .333.
