EXTRA CREDIT
Beth Lash, the daughter of Jenny and Mike Holden of Brainerd, graduated from St. Cloud State University. Lash earned a bachelor's of science in special education with a specialization in developmental disabilities. Lash accepted a special education teaching position at Talahi Elementary School in St. Cloud.

Courts
Joseph Thomas Kroll, 20, Brainerd, was sentenced to two days jail, placed on one year supervised probation and fined $300.

ACCIDENTS
A 31-year-old Little Falls man was killed in a motorcycle accident about 7 p.m. Saturday on Fourth Street Northwest in Brainerd, just north of Jackson Street.

HACKENSACK -- Minnie C. Clausen, age 65, of Hackensack, formerly of Minneapolis and Bloomington, passed away Friday, July 16, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 26, 1938 in Hillman, MN to Earl and Florence (Brown) Keehr.

STAPLES -- Ruth Christle, 87, Staples, died Friday, July 16, 2004, in at North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bemidji. Funeral services will be Monday, July 19, 2 p.m., at Staples Assembly of God Church. Interment will be at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

OTTERTAIL -- Lewis Blanchard, 67, Ottertail, died Friday, July 15, at his home. Memorial services will be Tuesday, July 20, 11 a.m., at Staples Missionary Alliance Church, with Reverend Harold Salem officiating. Interment will be private.

CROSBY -- Alice A. Avant age 79 of Crosby died on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby. She was born on Sept. 30, 1924 in Okinawa Japan to Kama and Masako (Hieyane) Arakaki. She married Donald R. Avant on Jan. 18, 1950 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Open Forum
After reading "The Greatest Generation," and many more books including "Band of Brothers" and being a World War II vet myself, now I see on the front page of the Sunday, July 11, 2004, Dispatch the changing of the guard. While looking at the pictures of Gaylord Zelinske and Don Hauck, a lump comes to my throat.

Brainerd splits with Cold Spring
The Brainerd VFW baseball team lost 9-4 to Cold Spring in the first game of a doubleheader before rebounding to win the second game 10-6 Friday in Cold Spring.

14-hit attack powers Brainerd
PAYNESVILLE -- The Brainerd Legion baseball team kept the wheels rolling as it traveled to Paynesville and came away with its ninth straight victory, winning 11-8.

Four of a kind
Baxter's Mark Johnson won his fourth consecutive Wissota Street Stock feature Saturday night at North Central Speedway. Other main feature winners were polesitters Brad Jensen and John Thompson in Wissota Super Stock and Wissota Midwest Modified and Charlie Peterson in NCS Pure Stock.
